Sách bò, lá sách and bible tripe: one product
Vietnamese buyers call the omasum sách bò or lá sách bò, after the book-like leaves of the third stomach. English documents use omasum, bible tripe or book tripe; Chinese-speaking traders write 牛百葉. In Simplified characters that is 牛百叶, and the salted product is often listed as 盐毛肚 or 盐渍毛肚, where 毛肚 means the omasum. Buffalo omasum is sách trâu.
It is a different product from khăn lông (blanket tripe, the rumen) and tổ ong (honeycomb tripe, the reticulum). Use the word omasum on the contract and the health certificate so the quarantine description matches the goods. Our omasum terminology guide sets out all four stomachs with their English, Chinese and Vietnamese names.
What Vietnam requires before a salted omasum container can clear
Vietnam controls animal-origin food through the Department of Animal Health and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. For salted omasum — a raw product, not heat-treated — an importer should check four things before contracting:
- Country approval. Under Decree 15/2018/ND-CP, the exporting country must be on Vietnam’s list of countries approved to export the relevant animal-origin food.
- Establishment approval. Exporters of animal-origin food other than processed, pre-packaged products must be on the list of establishments approved for export to Vietnam. Vietnamese authorities treat heat-treated meat as processed; salted omasum is not heat-treated.
- Quarantine registration. The importer registers the consignment for animal quarantine under Circular 01/2026/TT-BNNMT, which replaced Circular 25/2016 and its amendments on 1 January 2026. The border quarantine office can take samples for testing before it issues the import quarantine certificate.
- Dated labels. Production and expiry dates must appear in day-month-year format under Decree 43/2017/ND-CP. A consignment missing legible dates on the outer packing is refused and returned, however complete the rest of the paperwork.
Our track record. Ubaid Imperial omasum consignments have cleared import in Vietnam, and documentation from previous shipments is shared with qualified buyers on enquiry. Lists and circulars still change, so we confirm eligibility for your consignment in writing before contract — not after the container has sailed. Tell us your company and port at the enquiry stage and we will state exactly what we can certify. Official background: USDA FAS Vietnam import regulations report.

Built for a tropical routing
Most salted omasum lost in transit to Southeast Asia is lost to heat, not paperwork. Pink discolouration from salt-tolerant bacteria spoils a whole container, not part of one. Our controls:
- Salted within two hours of slaughter
- Salt cure, 30 days minimum, above 12 °C
- Food-grade non-iodised salt, NaCl 97% minimum, never reused
- Water activity 0.80 or below before loading
- Reefer container at 0 to +4 °C for the full voyage
- 12 months shelf life unopened, stored below 25 °C and dry
The detail is in our guide to preventing salted omasum spoilage in transit, and the tariff classification in the HS code guide for salted beef omasum. Supplying Hong Kong too? Why Vietnamese importers buy from Bangladesh
Bangladesh exports omasum to Vietnam, Hong Kong and China, with around 40 active exporters according to The Business Standard. Supply rises sharply after Eid-ul-Adha each year.
Among exporters, the difference is what is put in writing. We publish grades in grams, state the desalted yield basis on the contract, retain a counter-sample from every lot, and welcome third-party pre-shipment inspection, arranged and paid by the buyer. Product samples are free; the buyer arranges the courier and should check import permission for the sample first.
Vietnam importer questions
What is the minimum order for salted omasum to Vietnam?
14 MT. Monthly capacity is two 40 ft containers, each loaded at 1,350 cartons and 27.0 MT net under our standard conservative loading.
Have you shipped salted omasum to Vietnam before?
Yes. Ubaid Imperial salted beef omasum consignments have cleared import in Vietnam. Documentation from previous shipments is shared with qualified buyers on enquiry by WhatsApp or through the quote form.
Which Vietnamese port do you ship to?
Our standard term is CFR Haiphong, 18–25 days from Bangladesh including transhipment. Other Vietnamese discharge ports are quoted on request, and FOB Bangladeshi port is available.
Is the omasum cattle or buffalo?
Both. Our omasum is mainly cattle, about 92%, with about 8% buffalo. Cattle and buffalo omasum are packed together in the same lot, so we do not offer cattle-only lots. If your import permit or customer specifies a species, tell us at enquiry and we confirm before contract.
Are production and expiry dates on the cartons?
Yes. Every outer carton carries production date, expiry date, lot number, grade and weights, because Vietnam refuses animal-origin food without legible dates.
Is Scalded White omasum bleached?
No. The membrane is removed with hot water at 60–77 °C and by mechanical cleaning. We use no hydrogen peroxide, caustic soda, formaldehyde or quicklime.
What does the importer need to arrange in Vietnam?
Quarantine registration with the Department of Animal Health, and confirmation that the origin country and exporting establishment are approved for the product. We confirm in writing what we can certify before contract. Our previous consignments have cleared import in Vietnam.
How long does salted omasum keep?
12 months from production, unopened, stored below 25 °C and dry. We ship in a reefer at 0 to +4 °C to protect it through tropical routing.
Can we get a sample before ordering?
Yes. The product sample is free; the courier is arranged and paid by the buyer. Check that your import permission covers a courier parcel of salted ruminant material first.
